Melbourne’s Classic Design Icons Walking Tour

Sat, 24 Jun 2023
10:00 - 12:00

DESCRIPTION

A late start today, a pleasant stroll, and some lunch.

After the resounding success of the Heart of the City Walking Tour last year, today we again leave our cars at home and head into the big-smoke! The City of Melbourne has a number of self-guided walking tours, and today we are doing the “Classic Design Icons” tour. We will have ample opportunity to buy coffees, treats and food along the way. We will be doing the tour in reverse order so we finish in the CBD. Afterwards we will stop for lunch at your favourite city spot, if the rest of the group agrees. This non-driving day is a lovely social outing with a great group of people.

What does the City of Melbourne say about this tour? “Take a walk through Melbourne’s classic icons and architecture. After the 1850s Victorian gold rush, Melbourne exploded with displays of new wealth. Tour dramatic Gothic Revival facades, Art Deco jewels and Neoclassical monoliths. ” We will tour from the Shrine of Remembrance down to the Malthouse theatre and the Centre for Contemporary Art, the Recital Centre and Southbank Theatre, the National Gallery and Arts Centre, and the Eureka Tower before crossing the city’s oldest (now pedestrian) railway bridge and on to the functional beauty of the old Customs House and Port Authority Building, the Gothic gargoyles of the Old Stock Exchange, the Capitol and Manchester Unity Building, and finishing at the Town Hall. From here it is just a quick stroll to one of the many iconic eating laneways of our marvellous city.

NOTE: The walk is approximately 4.3 km and is expected to take 2 hours.
